He started out in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, teaching English in 2005 and then came to Beijing. He fell in love with China and has never left. First he began to write songs and sing them along with his guitar. Then he began to write to friends about what he was experiencing, and they saw his stories as helpful to a wider range of people wanting to understand the people of China.　　He went out of his way to learn about the lives of his students and befriend local officials. He wanted to understand the Chinese perspective.
